Changes in Grading Scheme: Incomplete/Complete and 75% to 85%

eCornell has implemented a new standardized grading system across our course catalog. Moving away from the previous Complete/Incomplete model, we’ve adopted a numerical grading scheme with a universal passing threshold of 85%. This means students must achieve an overall score of 85% or higher across all course assignments to successfully complete the course. This change represents an increase in academic standards for some courses that previously required a 75% passing threshold, ensuring consistency and excellence across all our programs.

A numerical grade for eCornell courses allows students to have a clear sense of the final grade received in their enrolled program. After hearing from students and implementing their feedback, we hope this enhancement will make it easier for them to leverage tuition assistance from their employers by being able to demonstrate a passing grade. To complete a course successfully, a passing grade of 85% or greater is required across all eCornell courses as a new standard.

The ability to grant multiple attempts in Course Projects will allow students to have more than one chance to complete their work. In Codio courses, Facilitators are able to assist students by marking any Course Project as needs work or "Uncompleted", if a second attempt is needed. Having easy access to Facilitators feedback through the Grades area in Canvas will allow students to work more closely with their facilitator to ensure they are grasping core concepts.

If students reach out with concerns about their previous courses not reflecting the current grading scheme, please let them know are able to obtain a letter reflecting the numerical equivalent grade to prior Compete/Incomplete courses by contacting our Student Support Team at ec_helpdesk@cornell.edu.

Should you have questions or concerns about the grading scheme in your course or for a specific assignment, please do not hesitate to reach out the Facilitation Support Team at ec_facilitation@cornell.edu.
