Enabling Student Use of Closed Captioning in Zoom

Zoom now offers a closed captioning feature, which offers live transcription for an ongoing meeting. This does not record the meeting directly, it only allows students to see subtitles as the meeting runs in real-time. Information on the Zoom website regarding this feature can be found on this page.

To ensure you Zoom Meeting settings are set up to allow students to enabled this feature, you can do the following:

  1. Navigate to https://cornell.zoom.us/profile and login with your Net ID email (@cornell.edu) and password pair.
  2. Click on Settings from the left-hand navigational menu, and then click Meeting:
  1. From here, click on In Meeting (Advanced), then, ensure the Automated captions on device setting is toggled to ON, as shown below.

*If this setting is showing as gray with a 'Locked by Administrator' note, please reach out to Cornell University IT at itservicedesk@cornell.edu to request this setting be enabled for your account.

During your live session, if a student shares that they are having difficulty enabling closed captioning, they can do so by clicking the "three dot" Options menu, and then clicking Show Captions:
