Replace a Master -M With a Redux Version of the Course

Occasionally, a redux version of a course will need to replace the current master version, so that the changes in the redux are applied to future course sections.

Swap an Existing -M With Another Version of the Course

To swap an existing -M with another version of the course on Canvas, follow these steps in order.

  1. Open the current -M. This is the course to be archived.
    1. From Settings, change both the Name and the SIS ID to ABC123ARCHYYYY (where YYYY is replaced with the current year). Note that you will replace ABC123 with the course code, such as SHA681 below.
    1. From Settings, change the Term to be Default Term.
    2. Unpublish the newly archived course.
  2. In a separate tab, open the redux version. This is the course to become the new master.
    1. From Settings, change the SIS ID to ABC123-M.
    2. Ensure the Name appears as ABC123: Course Title and Course Code appears as ABC123.
    3. Change the Term to be Master Courses.
  3. In the AA Maintenance pages of both courses, you will add a note with a link to the other course and a brief explanation.
    1. In the new master, add text that reads: "Note: Course redux was published MM/DD/YY — archived master can be found here: [link to archived version]"
    2. In the archived version, add text that reads: "Note: This course was archived on MM/DD/YY — redux master can be found here: [link to -M version]"
  4. If the course has Codio content, be sure to tag Ted Blanchard in the Wrike task, letting him know that there is a new -M course and he needs to correct the forks.

Handling Blueprints When Making a New -M Course

If the ARCH course had previously been set as a blueprint, follow these steps to get the -T and DEMO courses associated with the new -M.

  1. In the ARCH...
    1. Unassociate the -T and Demo courses from the ARCH.
    2. Uncheck "Enable course as Blueprint Course."
  2. In the -T and DEMO Courses...
    1. Wipe clean the -T and Demo courses using the Content Deletion utility.
  3. In the New -M Course
    1. Set the new -M course to be a Blueprint following these instructions.
      1. Be sure to associate the -T and Demo courses with this new -M course.

How did we do?

2. Create & Add Course Transcript (CT) to Course

3. Create -T (Training Course) and Associate With Master Blueprint
