File Naming and Storage Convention Standards

Downloadable Naming Conventions

Below are file naming standards for course downloadables. Standardizing final file names will improve team communication and organization and will help the Copy Editing and Quality Assurance team when navigating files in S3 and ensuring links in courses always work.

Note: Google doc drafts do not need to follow these standards.

The Creative team will name files using the following conventions:

Model:

abc101_tool-title

abc101_activity-title

abc101_glossary

abc101_action-plan

abc101_course-project

Example:

ceem571_tool-presentation-prep.pptx

ceem571_activity-reflect-on-your-talk.pdf

ceem571_glossary.pdf

ceem571_action-plan.pdf

ceem571_course-project.docx

Notice that the file names use lowercase letters, which are more accessible for students using screen readers, and do not include versioning details in their titles.

Downloadable File Structure

Within the ABC101 Creative folder, the Creative team will add an InDesign folder to store InDesign files, and a Final Files folder, to store all PDFs, Word, Excel, and PPT docs.

Folder Structure

ABC101 Course Name

  • 3 Non-Video Course Content (Activities/Tools/Projects)
    • ABC101 Creative
      • InDesign
      • Final Files
