On-Demand Lesson Utility

Jason Carroll Updated by Jason Carroll

Introduction

This document describes the process for building OD lessons, selecting banner images, creating lesson quizzes, and developing BLGs using the Canvas OD building utility (the OD Bot).

Ideally this entire process should be completed by the Instructional Designer who developed the Parent Course Content.

You will need to use Firefox and install the utility following the steps in the Knowledge Base

Build OD Lessons

You will complete these steps once for each Parent course.

  1. Navigate to the -M of the parent course -  this utility will not work on anything but the -M version of the course
  2. Click the Canvas Utility button
  3. Click On-Demand Lesson Utility.
  4. Checking your conversion notes, select the modules you want to develop lessons for. When using this utility, you must select all modules you want built into OD lessons at this time - you cannot come back and choose additional modules later. In most cases, you will select all the modules unless you’ve identified one that is not appropriate for an OD lesson.
    1. If you get a message that OD lessons exist for this course, stop and contact Kim Smith for assistance.
  5. Verify the faculty info is correct
  6. Access your conversions notes and deselect anything you don’t want to include in the OD lesson.
Note: intros, wrapups, discussions, and projects are automatically excluded.
  7. Review the section list to verify that it looks right.
  8. Review the learning objectives. These are pulled from the module introduction.
    1. Narrow them down to 2 or 3 and ensure that nothing you’ve cut from the module is included in the objectives.
    2. Tweak those chosen to adjust the language, if necessary.
  9. Verify lesson duration.
  10. Click Finish and the Create Lessons.

Build Lesson Quizzes

You will complete these steps for each lesson.

  1. Navigate to the newly built lesson in Canvas
  2. The bot will generate questions - review the questions to ensure that they address the point of the module. The bot will generate more than the 4 required questions, but by the end of this process, you should have only 4 questions.
  3. As needed, edit the question, answer, and feedback text.
  4. Delete any questions you don’t want
  5. As needed, generate additional questions.
  6. Once you are happy with your four questions, click Finish.
  7. Publish the new lesson
  8. Publish module and all items, which will publish your new quiz.
  9. Review the new quiz in Canvas

Build BLG

You will complete these steps for each lesson. This process is very similar to the quiz builder.

  1. Navigate to the OD lesson in Canvas
  2. Select the BLG Builder from the OD Lesson Utility
  3. Click Generate Questions
  4. You will eventually want 7 questions - at least two for each BLG section. Just like with the quiz, choose the most applicable questions and edit them as needed. You can generate addition questions as needed. You will then delete those you don’t want.
  5. Save the draft. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP
  6. Once you’ve saved the draft, you can review it and again make edits if needed within the utility.
  7. IF YOU ARE COMPLETING THIS AS PART OF A COURSE UPDATE STOP HERE
  8. Once you are happy with your BLG, use the utility to export it to S3.
If you are doing this as a part of an update, you will not complete this step until the launch date given to you by the OD admin.

Select Banner Image

You will complete these steps for each lesson.

  1. Navigate to the OD lesson in Canvas
  2. Select the Banner Generator from the Canvas Utility.
  3. The bot will present you with several pages of images, but you can usually find a good one on the first 1-2 pages.
    1. Avoid images with text or a lot of whitespace
  4. Select an image and click Upload and Embed. You’ll need to refresh your page to see the new banner image.
