Send Students a Direct Message on Canvas

You can use the Canvas Inbox to communicate with your learners and others at eCornell.

If you'd like to start a direct message thread with a specific student, you are able to do that both from the gradebook by way of a gentle nudge (steps in this article if you'd like a refresher), or via the Inbox.

To send via the Inbox directly, click on the Inbox icon on the upper right of your Dashboard

Click the Compose pencil icon to start a new message.

To select your current course, click Select Course, then hover over Favorite Courses and select the course in question.

In the To field, click the Contacts icon on the right.

Select Students.

Select the students' name, draft your message into the message field, and click Send.

Please keep all communications about your courses within the Canvas Inbox.

Note: Seven days after a course has ended, the messaging feature will no longer be active.
