3. Upload Edited Captions to Kaltura

Markette Pierce Updated by Markette Pierce

Uploading Process

Beginning in Spring 2023, this process is not occurring in new course builds, as 3Play automatically syncs with Kaltura. Use this process when working on a course whose source SRT files exist in SubPLY but not in 3Play (as in addressing course maintenance tickets).
  1. Download the copy edited SRT files to your desktop.
  2. Navigate to Kaltura and log in.
  3. Search for the VideoID. Select video from search return.
  4. Scroll down and click on Captions in the left navigation.
  5. Click Add Caption.
  6. Click Upload File and select the file with the same VideoID as the video that needs the caption and click Open. Click Add Caption to add this file to the video.
    1. When uploading just one SRT file, as is typical, it will automatically default to display on player as the default caption. When working with multiple language files, be sure to set the English language SRT file to be the default by toggling on Display on Player and then clicking Set as Default.
  1. Click Save.

Troubleshooting

If you’re ever uploading SRTs to Kaltura and the file gets stuck on “Processing” instead of “Saved” status (see below), here’s what to do.

  1. Open the SRT file in a plain text editor and make sure there’s nothing wild about the SRT (i.e., it’s not in the regular SRT format).
  2. Make a second attempt at uploading the SRT.
  3. Once you are successful, mark the still- “Processing” SRT to “No” on “Display on Player”
  4. Set the working, saved caption as default and save. There should be just one English option that loads. Otherwise, the text transcript doesn’t automatically load for students!
