Pendo Overview

NOTE: This article is intended for a general overview about what Pendo is and why we use it. If you have questions or need guidance about the technical implementation of Pendo, see this article.
What is Pendo?

Pendo is a product-analytics solution that provides for a broad multi-purpose suite of tools. There are two main typical uses here at eCornell: student behavior analytics, and interface interaction guides, tooltips, and surveys. This tool is managed by the Product Management team; if you are interested in leveraging a Pendo guide or have access to student behavior analytics, reach out to Liz Tarshis at liz.tarshis@cornell.edu.

Analytics

Our Product Team is able to access Pendo to review useful interactive data, like how long students spend on a page, where they click the most, how they navigate, etc. These analytics provide insights into student behavior, interface bugs, and overall product user experience.

Interactive Guides

Interactive Guides allow us to create pop-up tooltips and modals when a student or user accesses a page. The most common use of this at eCornell is to provide guidance with an unfamiliar tool, such as Codio. We use custom interactive templates in Pendo to orient the user in the page. Taking Codio for example, the tooltips will point out the working space for students, the submission button, and the general workflow to complete an interactive exercise. These interactive guides are typically UI related: how to navigate the space and important features to note.

When do we use Pendo?

If there is a new tool or canvas page with custom interaction, we would leverage Pendo to create a walkthrough, guiding the student through the new UI.

For example, Pendo has been implemented to appear in the first instance of a Codio exercise in a certificate/course. This way if a student is seeing a Codio unit for the first time, they can click through the Pendo walkthrough to orient themselves.

If you think your course is a candidate for a Pendo guide or series of tooltips, email Liz Tarshis at liz.tarshis@cornell.edu.
