Storing Documents in Multiple Locations

Markette Pierce Updated by Markette Pierce

The Shift-Z Shortcut

Shift-Z allows a single document to be stored in two or more locations in Gdrive. This is different than making a copy, which creates a new, separate, and independent file. When you use the Shift-Z shortcut, the same document is stored in multiple places but remains a single editable file. This allows you to edit the file in one location and know the changes will be reflected in all document instances.

How to use the Shift-Z shortcut

  1. Click to highlight the desired document or folder
  2. Once it is highlighted press Shift and Z simultaneously
  3. A window will appear. This is how you choose where you want to store the file.

  1. Click My Drive  >  (right-side arrow on the green bar) and then navigate to the folder where you want to store the file.
  2. Once you locate the storage location click ADD HERE.

  1. Voila! Your single file is now stored in 2 locations. Pretty slick, eh!
