S3 Basics

Graphics, downloadable course documents (such as course projects and tools), artwork, and photos (including faculty headshots) are stored and linked in Amazon's S3 service. ID/As are responsible for uploading any graphics and faculty headshots.

Access S3

  1. Open Amazon S3.
If you do not have an S3 login, please contact Eric Galvin.
  1. Enter your email and password and click Sign In.
  1. On the landing page, verify that the page is set to Buckets view. Enter "ecornell" in the search field and hit Enter.
  1. Open the folder and enter "content" in the search field and hit Enter.
After the initial login to S3, it will default to the eCornell/content page going forward. If it doesn't, repeat the steps above.
  1. Under the Name column, there are folders for each Cornell school, listed by the abbreviated acronym. In the search bar, enter the school you need and press Enter, or scroll until you find the appropriate acronym and click to open the folder.
  1. Within the acronym folder, scroll to find the appropriate course code for the course you are working on. Click on the course hyperlink to open the folder.

Upload Files to S3

To upload a file into your course folder in S3:

  1. Click Upload.
  1. On the Upload screen, click Add Files.
  1. Navigate to the Creative/Final Files folder in the Google Drive folder for your course. Select the appropriate files and click Open.
  1. Once all needed files are selected, click Upload.
  1. This landing page opens to watch the progress of your upload.
  1. Once all downloads are complete, navigate back to the course folder. Select the file(s) to open.
    1. When selecting multiple files, select the appropriate files:
      1. Click Actions and select Make Public.
    2. When selecting an individual file, select the appropriate file:
      1. Click Object Actions and select Make Public.
  2. On the following page, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Make Public.
By making a file "public", it makes the file visible to students in the course.
  1. The files are ready to be linked into Canvas.

Upload Faculty or Ask the Expert Headshots

  1. From the eCornell Bucket (see step 3 in Access S3 above), enter "global" in the search field and hit Enter.
  1. In the Global folder, scroll or search for "bios".
  1. In the Bios folder, click faculty/ (or experts/ for Ask the Experts).
  1. In the faculty or experts folder, click Upload.
  1. On the Upload screen, click Add Files.
  1. Navigate to the file(s) to be uploaded from your computer or Google Drive. Select the file(s) and click Open.
  1. When all of the files are selected, click Upload.
  1. The upload progress page opens. Once the files have uploaded, navigate back to the faculty (or experts) folder. Search for the file you just uploaded and open it.
  2. On the file landing page, click Object Actions and select Make Public.
  3. On the page that opens, scroll to the bottom and click Make Public.
  1. The headshot is now ready to be linked in Canvas.
