How to Install the Firefox Canvas Utilities Extension

Jason Carroll Updated by Jason Carroll

Why Firefox Only? This extension is currently available only for Firefox. Chrome extensions require manual review for every single change made to the extension. Since this utility is under significant development, Firefox's automated review process allows for faster updates and bug fixes. When the extension becomes more stable, a Chrome version may be considered.

Installation Process

Installing the Canvas Utilities extension is straightforward:

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Click this link if already in Firefox, or copy and paste it into the Firefox address bar, to download the extension: https://ecornell.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/casey/extensions/canvas-utilities/firefox/canvas-utils.xpi
You'll see a small popup appear on the side of your browser asking to add the extension
  3. Click "Add" - you'll see a confirmation the extension was added
  1. In the next pop-up window that appears, Check the "Allow this extension to run in Private Windows" box - this ensures the extension works if you use private browsing. Click "Okay"

Installation Not Working? If the installation link doesn't work, you're likely using an outdated version of Firefox. Use the eCornell self-service portal to update to the latest version of Firefox, then try again.

How to Access the Extension

Once logged into Canvas, look for a small icon in the corner of your screen (it's not the eCornell logo).

Click the icon to expand and access the canvas utilities.

After installation, you won't immediately see the extension everywhere in Firefox: You will only see it after logging into Canvas.

Forcing an Update

The extension automatically updates daily when new versions are available. In some rare cases, you may need an update immediately. Here's how to force an update:

  1. Access Firefox Extensions
    • Click the Firefox menu button (three horizontal lines in the top-right corner)
    • Select "Add-ons and Themes"
  1. Find the Canvas Utilities Extension
    • Locate "Cornell D&D Canvas Utilities" in your extensions list
    • Click the gear icon next to it
    • Select "Manage Extension"
  2. Check Your Version
    • You can see your current version number on this page
    • Ensure "Automatic Updates" is enabled (this should be the default)
  3. Force the Update
    • Click the gear icon on the extension management page
    • Select "Check for Updates"
    • The extension will immediately download and install the latest version
