On-Demand: Conversion Notes

Conversion notes are references to pages in the Expert-led course that indicate how that page needs to be changed to work in the OD lesson. IDs will create these conversion notes on the OD tab in the Course Planning Tool (CPT).

Conversion notes will indicate whether modules will be:

  • Independent lessons (one lesson per module in the parent course)
  • Two or more modules combined into one module
  • Offered sequentially because they are interrelated

Conversion notes will also indicate:

  • Precise deletions, additions, rephrasing, or repetition of content
  • Whether course project parts should be reworked as ungraded activities and if so, how
  • Lesson duration (should be between 30 and 90 minutes)
  • New title, if modules have been combined

To Create Conversion Notes

  1. Review the course in Canvas along with the video transcripts. You will be looking for instructor interaction, graded assignments, peer-to-peer interaction, references to other modules, and the terms "module" and "course".
    1. References to other modules: Add a conversion note to delete or change this reference. If it is a content reference, consider if the learner will need that content to be successful in the lesson. If they will need the content, add it as a Read page or as text on the associated Watch page.
    2. Activities that are submitted for a grade, review, require submissions, or interaction with the instructor or other students: revise activity to eliminate submission and/or interactions. Another option is to transition the activity into a Blended Learning Guide prompt.
    3. Activities that will take significant time to complete: revise if possible or convert into Blended Learning Guide prompts.
    4. Activities that require students to access something or perform an action that would be disruptive or impossible for hundreds of employees at an organization to perform at once (such as requesting information from the HR department.) Revise, if possible.
Deleting activities or content is an option, but should be your last option. Our courses are developed to not include unnecessary content and activities, so if it was included in the course, it is important to the learning experience. Try to revise as often as possible and delete as a last resort.
    1. In the video transcripts, look for:
      1. References to other modules:
        1. If it is a content reference, consider if the learner will need that content to be successful in the lesson. If they will need the content, add it as a Read page or as text on an associated Watch page.
Video edits are a last resort. Don’t jump to them as your first solution. Think creatively to avoid video edits and still provide the best experience for the learner. If a video edit seems the only option, discuss with your IDD

Additional Standard Canvas Pages

Below is how you will edit our standard not-for-credit course Canvas pages when creating conversion notes.

When completing the Page Changes section for each module, list the page name and the required changes. If a page does not require any changes, do not add it to this section.
The page types that regularly see changes are: Tool, Activity, Read, Watch page intros.
  • Home page – A new Home page will be created for the OD lesson. You will use the content on the course Home page to complete sections of the OD tab of the CPT.
  • Course Exit Survey – Ignore this page, it is not included in the OD lesson.
  • Stay Connected – Ignore this page, it is not included in the OD lesson.
  • Thank you and Farewell – Ignore this page, it is not included in the OD lesson.
  • Module Introduction – You will use the content on this page as your lesson introduction text:
    • Copy the text from the Canvas course and paste it into your CPT.
    • Change the term “module” to “lesson” throughout.
    • Delete or revise any statements referencing content you have indicated should not be included in the OD lesson. For example, if you are requesting an activity be deleted and that activity is mentioned in the module introduction, revise that statement in the introduction.
  • Quizzes – There will be one required quiz at the end of each OD lesson. Quizzes that exist in the Expert-led course and that you wish to be included in the OD lesson will be changed to ungraded. In your conversion notes, indicate if any questions should be removed or revised.
  • Discussions – Discussions will not be included as part of OD lessons, as they require peer and instructor interaction. The content can be used for quiz questions or BLG discussion prompts.
  • Glossaries – No need to review. These are not included in OD lessons.

Lesson Duration Estimate Method

The minimum lesson length is four pages of content (not including the wrap-up or the lesson quiz). If your lesson is shorter, consider combining it with another lesson.

Lesson durations are 30, 45, 60, 75, or 90 minutes. To calculate:

  • Click through the course and add up the video time. Then add one minute for each video for reading the introductory text.
Example: Four 3-minute videos = 12 minutes + 4 minutes (1 minute x 4 videos) = 16 minutes
  • Look at any non-video pages, and assign a length between five and 15 minutes based on how long each seems.
  • Add 10 minutes for the On-Demand lesson quiz.
