Canvas LMS: NEW Quiz compatibility

Jason Carroll Updated by Jason Carroll

Introduction

New Quizzes is a quiz engine that integrates with Canvas. New Quizzes display as assignments on the Assignments page and can be duplicated. For now, the new quiz format lives alongside classic quizzes. Let's compare the two formats:

Question Types: New Quizzes adds advanced types like Hot Spot, Categorization, and Ordering, which Classic Quizzes lacks.

Item Banks: New Quizzes allows sharing banks across multiple courses and offers better metadata tagging and search features.

Grading & Moderation: New Quizzes provides more flexibility with features like adding extra time for individual students and partial credit on more question types.

Reports & Analytics: Both offer basic item analysis, but New Quizzes has additional tools on the roadmap, like student analysis reports.

What is the difference between .imscc and .QTI?

Now that you know the differences between New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes in Canvas, let’s explore the formats used for importing and exporting quiz content: QTI and IMSCC. Understanding these formats is key to managing and transferring your quizzes effectively.

Canvas offers two file types when copying quizzes externally to other Canvas instances.

An .imscc file is a type of compressed file that allows course content to be easily imported into different Learning Management Systems (LMS). This makes it simple to share and use the same course materials across various platforms.

The .QTI extension refers to a file format used for exchanging quiz content between learning management systems. It allows for the seamless transfer of assessments across Canvas instances, preserving questions and formats without needing to recreate them. This is important when learning how to transfer individual NEW quizzes from CU to eC.
