How to Add VitalSource eBooks in Canvas

Jason Carroll Updated by Jason Carroll

This article walks through the process of adding VitalSource eBooks to Canvas. You’ll learn how to insert the correct launch URL, update student directions, and verify access from a student perspective.

Step 1 — Place the eBook in Course Resources

  1. From any page within the course, click Settings.
  2. Go to Modules → Course Resources
    1. Click the + button on that module.
  3. In Add section, choose External Tool.
  4. In the tool list, click “VitalSource Course Materials”.
This will auto-fill a (usually incorrect) VitalSource URL. That’s fine—this click is required to initialize the tool on the back end.
  1. In the URL field, replace the auto-filled URL with the exact Ops team-provided launch URL.
  2. Name the item clearly, e.g. StrengthsFinder 2.0. eBook
  1. Click Add ItemPublish it in Canvas(green check).

Step 2 — Verify Access

  • Preferred: Use Student View (works with this VitalSource integration).
  • Alternative (in Canvas sections only): Masquerade as a test student if you must validate a real learner context.
Note: On first open, VitalSource may present a screen with options to sign in or “Continue without account.” Students do not need to create an account.
