This article provides a guide on recording videos for both discussions and Course Project comments, as well as uploading external to Canvas.

I. On Discussion Boards

While in the a discussion board, you can use the Canvas built-in Record/Upload Media on the toolbar to record and upload a video:

  1. Click "Reply" to the discussion, or to a specific students post, then click the dropdown Record/Upload Media icon
  2. In the dropdown, click Upload/Record Media. The Upload Media popup window displays. It will look like this:
  1. Click the Record tab and your browser will request permission to access your webcam and your microphone. Click "Allow while visiting this site":

If you do not see the above pop up and cannot see your webcam, you may need to enable popups on your browser. Here is a guide for doing so in Google Chrome.
  1. You should now see your web camera view. If you do not see your camera view make sure you have the right device selected from the Webcam button in the bottom right.
Once you have your preferred camera selected, you can click Start Recording and when complete, click Finish.
  2. You can now review your video recording. If you want to redo the video, you can click Start Over. When complete Save Media.

III. Uploading an external video

If you would like to submit a video you recorded elsewhere (perhaps, hosted on the Cornell VOD site), you will want to upload a file attachment instead of submit a new recording.

This area is found both in discussions and within the comment area of the Speedgrader, and is identified by a 'paperclip' icon.

In the Speedgrader

In the Speedgrader, click the paperclip icon, then click Choose file

From here, you can select a file from your computer, and then click Open.

Once the file has loaded, you can then click Submit to attach as a comment. You can also write in the "Comments area" of the Speedgrader and submit a video all as one comment.

In Discussions

In the dropdown, click Upload/Record Media. The Upload Media popup window displays. It will look like this:

Then, when under the "Computer" tab, click Drag and drop, or click to browse your computer.

From here, find the file you wish to select, and click Open.

After opened, click Submit to add to the discussion post.

A placeholder for the video will appear in your editor window. You can continue adding other content to your page such as text, images, or other videos.

Click Reply at the bottom of the page to publish.
