Utilizing the AI-Enhanced Learners Feedback Tool

This feature is currently in testing- please use the "Report" feature within the tool to provide real-time feedback to our development team.

Our goal when building the AI-Enhanced Learners Feedback Tool is to help facilitators build an initial comment draft when grading student assignments in the SpeedGrader. Additionally, we hope the AI will function as an editor to refine and enhance facilitator comments before submission.

Locating the Utilizing the AI-Enhanced Learners Feedback Tool

When opening SpeedGrader, look for the ‘Assignment Comments’ section on the right-side menu, above the field where comments are submitted to students:

How to Use the Tool

Getting started
  1. Open SpeedGrader and view the student's assignment. Click the ‘Get Draft’ button to receive the initial draft text, which will be loaded into the comment box (this may take a few seconds). Once the draft is populated, it can be reviewed, modified, or enhanced before submitting the feedback.
  1. 2. Sometimes a message for the facilitator will be returned along with the draft. These will appear in a yellow box below the buttons, and can be closed by pressing the x in the upper-right corner of each box.

These messages may contain important information, as in this example demonstrating that the AI is currently unable to process file or image attachments.

  1. 3. In rare cases, there may not be a draft available yet. Usually it is ready within 3-4 minutes after a student submits an assignment, but sometimes it takes longer to prepare.

In these cases, you have the option to generate the draft immediately. To do this, click on the arrow next to ‘Get Draft’ and select the option ‘Generate Draft’. This process will take 1-2 minutes to complete, at which time the draft text will appear in the comments field for your editing.

Editing the Draft

The draft can now be edited as needed. Since AI may not always be perfect, it’s important to verify that the generated content is accurate and relevant. Substantial changes can be made, or the content can be rewritten to match personal tone and style. If the initial draft is appropriate, you may submit it without modification.

  • Once the comments are finalized, you may press the ‘Polish Text’ button. This sends the current text to the AI assistant, which acts as an editor to proofread for grammatical errors, improve word choice, and add a greeting or closing if needed. The AI will make minimal changes to the text. This process may take 30-60 seconds, during which time the buttons will be disabled, and the ‘Polish Text’ button will change to display ‘Waiting for AI…’.
  • Once the AI has finished, the comment field will be updated with the newly edited text. Review the text carefully to ensure the AI did not introduce any factual errors.

To view the specific changes made by the AI, click on ‘What did the polishing do?’ and the section will expand, showing the adjustments made.

To hide the details, click on ‘What did the polishing do?’ again.

  • If the changes made by the AI editor are unsatisfactory, click on the arrow next to ‘Polish Text’ and select ‘Undo’ to revert the text to its state before the ‘Polish Text’ button was pressed. This process may take a few seconds to complete.

The text can be edited further, and the ‘Polish Text’ and ‘Undo’ buttons can be used multiple times as needed.

In the event that AI-generated content is inaccurate, inappropriate, or requires review, please use the 'Report' button to notify Program Delivery staff.
  • Once the comments are finalized, press the ‘Submit’ button to send the feedback to the student.
